FIRST ANNUAL

BURNING OF DARIEN

COMMEMORATIVE FESTIVAL        JUNE 15, 2013 DARIEN, GEORGIA

Federal troops comprised of the 54th Massachusetts led by Col. Robert Gould Shaw and 2nd South Carolina Volunteers by Col. James Montgomery marched on the Coastal Georgia town of Darien, Georgia with the intent to vandalize and burn.

The largely deserted town was undefended at the time.

We will have the 54th Mass, Re-enactors portraying Colonels Shaw and Montgomery and other re-enactment groups that will march from Waterfront Park into Darien on Broad Street

They will stop in front of the Strain building, where Montgomery will order the troops to burn the town, and Shaw will disagree about the need to burn the town. After force from Montgomery, Shaw will reluctantly order the troops to burn the town.

Remember this will be used for educational purposes to explain why the town was burned and that Shaw and the 54th were against it.

Some of the troops will then begin to light the Memorial torches representing the buildings that we lost
